Paint Colours – How To Achieve Your Ideal Mood In Each Room

Though painting may seem like an inconsequential or mundane necessity for styling your home, or a simple way to give your home a fresher and crisper appearance, there is great potential to transform your space in more ways than just its aesthetic appeal. Creative, relaxing, inspiring – this is a short list of descriptions of the moods that colours in your home could invoke, and we will be walking through how you can achieve this through the use of paint!

Red

Red is a colour most often associated with feelings of passion and energy, but also danger and anger. Studies have also shown that the colour red could lead to an increased heart rate, which explains the energised associations with it. That being said, it would not be ideal to use red in rooms where you would want to invoke a serene and calm atmosphere, such as your bedroom or home office. Instead, red would be an appropriate choice for social spaces within your home, such as the dining or living rooms – especially if you are a seasoned host or hostess – as the energising feel would create the ideal environment for excitement and heightened social interaction. Studies have also shown that red has subconscious associations that may invoke greater appetite, perhaps because of the prevalence of red in ripe fruits and vegetables. Whatever the case may be, having a rich red hue in your dining room – or even as an accent wall – could completely transform your household’s dining experience for the better!

Blue

Blue is often associated with feelings of calmness, relaxation, and trust. Lighter shades of blue create a serene atmosphere, reminiscent of a clear sky, whilst darker shades of blue, such as navy, are more regal and dominant. Consider light blues for spaces in your home that are meant to be an escape for you – such as your bedroom, living room, or home library. Light blues are reasonably neutral and can blend well with a variety of colour palettes, and are easy on the eyes, so you could easily paint the entire room in them. Dark blue has a much more dramatic effect, and so it would be advisable to use it only on an accent wall adjacent to other more neutral tones in your home. Avoid dark blue – and dark colours in general – in rooms that are very small or lack natural lighting, as dark colours can make the space feel even more confined and uneasy, decreasing the utility of the room. Avoid blue in the dining room, as studies show an association of blue with the suppression of appetite.

Green

Green is the colour of the great outdoors – trees, grass, shrubs, and the like. Naturally, our associations with the colour green have to do with our seeing it outside, and it creates a calming and refreshing ambience in the room. Green is great for spaces such as bathrooms, where actual refreshing takes place, but also for common areas such as the dining and living room, especially if you are looking to create a natural atmosphere in your home. Pairing green with wooden or brown upholstered furniture has the power to enhance the natural appeal of your space, given our associations with brown and nature as well (think tree bark, earth, etc.). Lighter shades of green create an airier effect, whereas darker shades are moodier and more dramatic.

Other colours

White is easily associated with cleanliness and purity and has the power to make any space feel crisp and fresh. White can be softened with a variety of undertones in order to reduce the starkness of its appearance; however, the overuse of white in a space can appear too bland or clinical. Balancing it out with different coloured furniture and finishes can easily mitigate this problem. Nonetheless, white is undoubtedly the most versatile colour, fitting in with a myriad of aesthetics from contemporary to rustic or more classic styles, and can fit easily in any room of the house!

Pink is considered the colour of fun or romance and can be a whimsical addition to most social rooms in your home for a touch of playfulness, such as the dining or living room. Soft shades of pink have a beautiful subtlety that can brighten the mood of almost any space in your home and are greatly versatile, whereas hot pink and magentas are vibrant, energising, and quirky. Not everyone’s taste, but the bold and adventurous will take an affinity towards it!

Orange is warm and inviting. Like red, it has an energising effect, but on a more toned-down level, making it more useful around your home. A children’s playroom would be greatly enhanced by orange paint, and its gender-neutral hue makes it versatile for this purpose. A dramatic greeting in the foyer, or a pleasant energy jolt in the family room, could be easily achieved by the use of orange paint.

Purple or violet has long been recognised as the colour of royalty. Lighter shades are able to create a serene environment and an uplifting mood, whereas darker shades are more dramatic, suitable for the audacious, who would like to recreate the appearance of regality in their homes. For the longest time, purple was one of the most expensive colours to produce, which is why it had always had associations with the rich and royal. Pair it with other luxurious finishes like brass and elaborate textures to elevate your space into the palatial ambience that you deserve!
