Choosing hardware for the final touches of your renovation has the power to gear your home’s aesthetic into a completely different direction. Though we may consider fixtures like cabinet handles, faucets, or showerheads as inconsequential, making the right decision about which one of these you choose is the difference between thoughtful and intentional design and a chaotic arrangement.
Let’s see how each of the various fixture colours above can be used to enhance your home!
Brass
Brass can come in a great variety of finishes, and can range from having that antique appeal to having a warmer and more modern lustre. It definitely can convey luxury, especially when paired with natural stone counters in the kitchen or in the bathroom. Though brass has come into popularity a lot recently, with gold finishes taking every home by storm, trends do come and go.
The key to achieving a truly timeless look with brass is to lean towards antique designs, such as brushed brass or antique brass. Unlacquered brass also has the potential to age gracefully within a home, adding charm and character through the way that it patinas over the years.
Gold and polished brass are also undoubtedly beautiful and elevate any space where they are installed, but given their trendiness, it is hard to tell how this particular fad will age down the line, and this is important to consider when looking to put upgrades in your home that will hold their value as time progresses.
The upside of polished brass is that it can mask fingerprints and water spots better than polished brass or gold; however, the lustre of a polished brass finish is undeniably alluring, and is certain to be the attention-grabber of your space!
Though gold is not as durable as a few of the other finishes that we will walk through in this blog post, it can have reasonable durability with proper care. Always take care not to use abrasive solutions to wipe your brass finishes down, as this can cause fading and dulling over time. Instead, a microfibre cloth and a vinegar solution should do the trick!

Black
Black is also another fixture colour that has taken the design world by storm, and for good reason. It is unapologetically bold, flexible, and wonderfully modern. Black is naturally the colour of sophistication, and black fixtures exude that same appeal. Because it is generally considered a neutral colour, black fixtures can go well with many different colours. When paired with lighter colours, like a white sink, black is very bold and is quite the attention-grabber, whereas it blends seamlessly with greys and other darker colours.
Black is also certainly not as timeless as brass can be, and many designers foresee it falling out of favour within a few years and becoming “dated” because of how specific it is. This is something that you also ought to keep in mind if you do not wish to constantly update your finishes, or if you plan to sell your home in the future, as the black may not suit everyone’s palate quite the same way. For now, however, it is still a popular choice, and so if you are one who is keen to keep up with the latest home design trends, then black will certainly be the choice for you. Black does especially well in ultra-modern and sleek
Given that the matte black colour is achieved by anodising metals such as titanium and then finishing them off with a powder coating, which provides a very durable and protective layer. Given this, black finishes are generally more durable than brass, and the matte finish does well at masking fingerprints, scratches, and water spots – though not all black finishes are exactly equal in this regard. This makes the cleaning process very simple! A microfibre cloth and a mild cleaning solution – like soap – is good enough to get the job done without eroding the coating.

Chrome
Chrome has not necessarily had the same level of notoriety as black and brass have over the past few years, but it is certainly one of the most timeless finishes you can go for. Chrome has a highly lustrous appeal to it that, if well taken care of, can brighten the appearance of any room in your home.
Chrome is certainly one of the most versatile colour choices you can make, and despite its gleaming lustre, it can blend seamlessly into any environment and not necessarily make itself the centre of attention. This is what makes it so beautifully versatile as well, as it is unlikely to ward off potential buyers in the future (if you intend to sell your home down the line) by appearing to be too outdated, or by catering to too specific an aesthetic. You can pair it with various colours as it is a fairly neutral finish choice.
Despite its timeless appeal, chrome often tends to be very reasonably priced and is often priced at a lower point than its gold and black counterparts for the same designs within the same brand. This makes it accessible for varying budgets, and it means that you can achieve that timeless and elegant look without having to break the bank.
The downside of chrome, however, is that it does require a little bit more maintenance to keep it looking shiny and lustrous – it simply doesn’t have the same level of charm if this unique feature is not brought out to its fullest capacity. It does tend to display watermarks and fingerprints more easily, which means that it will need to be wiped down much more frequently, but this can be considered a small price to pay for an addition to your home that is sure to last through the ages.
